The authors investigated whether the death of a child increased mortality in parents. They observed a significantly increased overall mortality in bereaved mothers, but not in bereaved fathers. Mothers had increased mortality rates from unnatural causes (including suicide) throughout follow-up, with the highest rate recorded during the first 3 years. (29 refs)
