The author argues that there needs to be an awareness initiative to inform parents and educators that elementary school-age children have the ability to plan and complete suicide. The concepts of knowledge, awareness, & suicidal behavior are addressed. Suicidal behavior in children & suicide mortality data for this population are discussed. School-based suicide prevention programs are also reviewed. (14 refs)
