This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature surrounding arson in order to better understand the characteristics, motivations, & methods of arsonists. Suicidality is discussed as both a motive & an outcome of arson behaviours. Cited motives for arson include using the act as a cry for help, an antidepressant, & a means of attempting suicide, as well as undertaking self-immolation as a political gesture. Some arsonists also attempt suicide following their arrests & incarcerations. (66 refs)
