This article describes the nurses’ role in the assessment & treatment of bipolar disorder. Challenges in the diagnosis of bipolar disorder are identified, & consequences of delayed or missed diagnosis, including suicide, are reviewed. Techniques for improving diagnostic accuracy are discussed, & post-diagnosis management & treatment options are explored. The role of the psychiatric nurse or nurse practitioner in educating bipolar patients & their families is also discussed. (46 refs)
