The authors discuss the current debate about selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants & self-harm/suicidality. The challenges faced by regulatory institutions in determining an association between SSRIs & suicide risk are identified. The methodology, findings, & implications of a study by H Jick et al. are also highlighted. This study failed to provide evidence for a specific link between SSRIs & increased risk for suicide.
