This article describes 1 psychometric instrument, the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), as an example of how particular assessment instruments can help inform the process of decision-making within the forensic arena. An overview of the PAI is provided, & specific assessment issues within forensic psychological assessment are identified. Suicide is discussed as 1 component of risk appraisal, & a case example is provided in order to illustrate how certain results from the PAI can facilitate case formulation & treatment planning.
