The author argues that the literature indicates serious problems with the role psychiatry (i.e. the medical treatment of mental disorder) plays in relation to deliberate self-harm & suicide. Through a review of the research, he explores the role of psychiatry in suicide prevention, & highlights the possibility for the enhancement of self-esteem as part of inpatient psychiatric care. Emphasis is given to suicide prevention through health education. (32 refs)
