The author examines the epidemiology of hostage/barricade situations involving suicide risk among the elderly population. The associations between substance abuse, depression & elderly suicide are highlighted, & a case study & analysis is provided in order to demonstrate how these factors can combine & escalate to create a crisis situation. Crisis negotiation strategies are reviewed, & a list of Internet resources is included.
