This article explores the characteristics of borderline personality disorder, a disorder that may occur with relative frequency in adolescents who have been severely maltreated. Behaviours indicating the possibility of borderline personality disorder existing are reviewed, including suicidal ideation & attempts. Suggestions for treatment for the adolescent & his or her family are explored. (26 refs)
