Regarding an investigation by S Karmali et al. into the epidemiology of severe trauma among status Aboriginal Canadians, the author identifies several issues that need to be explored before the findings can be fully understood. She advocates assessment & documentation of Aboriginal trauma for associated morbidity as well as mortality; inclusion of all Aboriginal populations as opposed to only status groups; identification & quantification of factors contributing to Aboriginal trauma; engagement with health-service issues beyond emergency treatment; & research collaboration with Canada’s Aboriginal population.
