The authors define & discuss deliberate self harm. Differences between suicidal behaviours & self-harming behaviours without suicidal intent are examined. The epidemiology of deliberate self harm in adolescents is explored, along with possible motives & characteristics of children who self-harm & of those who die by suicide. Risk factors for self harm are identified, & strategies for assessment, treatment, & prevention are presented. (12 refs)
