The author discusses the epidemiology of suicide with relation to the current state of research. He argues that while research & prevention efforts have resulted in positive outcomes in many countries (such as the arrest of rising rates), there is still a long way to go. Areas for further research are identified & topics of interest addressed at the 10th European Symposium on Suicide & Suicidal Behaviour are highlighted. (1 ref)
