This article reviews the current epidemiology of suicide with specific reference to a study by D Juurlink et al., which boasts several impressive methodologic features, confirms previous findings regarding the heavy burden imposed by depression & other psychiatric conditions, & highlights opportunities for prevention & treatment, particularly among the elderly. 3 major directions for future research are also identified.
