This article reviews research on the development of optimism & hope & interventions designed to build these qualities in youth. The Penn Resiliency Program is discussed as an example of a school-based intervention that may promote hope & prevent symptoms of depression, anxiety, & suicidal ideation. Limits of existing studies & directions for future research are also discussed. (87 refs)
