The characteristics of private psychotherapy patients of medical psychoanalysts are described. In a sample of 575 patients, lifetime rates of attempted suicide, psychiatric hospitalization, hallucinations, delusions, manic episodes, & childhood sexual abuse were each less than 15%, but 25% of all patients had had at least one of the preceding experiences. 8% of patients reported at least one suicide attempt.
