The co-occurrence of depressive symptoms & substance misuse creates important management issues, both at the level of the individual patient & regarding service provision, which are explored here. The epidemiology of depression co-occurring with drug & alcohol misuse is examined, & the high risk for suicide in this population is discussed. Symptoms, assessment, & management, including psychological therapies, are reviewed. Prognosis & service provision are also discussed. (31 refs)
