In this study the authors explored the characteristics of psychotic patients with suicide attempts in the rural community of Xinjin County, Chengdu, China. The rate of suicide attempts was found to be 8.17% among all the psychotic patients (906 cases). Patients with affective psychosis showed a significantly higher rate of suicidal attempts than those with schizophrenia. Patients with suicide attempts were also found to be younger with an earlier age of onset than those without. The need for community-based services is emphasized. (34 refs)
