The authors assessed the prevalence of anabolic steroid use in a large population-based sample of adolescents, & identified personal, socio-environmental, & behavioral factors related to the health of adolescents that use anabolic steroids. They found that in males, steroid use was associated with poorer self-esteem & higher rates of depressed mood & attempted suicide. Implications of these & other findings are discussed. (24 refs)
