This article considers the question of whether Meriwether Lewis’ death was a suicide by examining historical evidence from a psychological perspective. A risk factor model for suicide assessment is used to evaluate historical, personal, psycho-social environmental, & clinical risk factors as well as protective factors. The authors conclude that although there is some evidence to support a theory of murder, the preponderance of evidence indicates that Lewis died by suicide. (14 refs)
