The author repeated the Gotland study in 3 districts of Budapest in the year 1998. The education program was implemented in 1 district, while the other 2 neighbouring ones were used as controls. In the year after the education training (1999), suicide rates as well as the marked turnover of antidepressants increased in each of the 3 districts. On the basis of these results, the author concludes that fluctuations in suicide rates are due to random effects both in the Gotland study & in the present survey. (11 refs)
