Media Influences on Suicidal Behaviour: Contributory Factors and Preventive Strategies

Certain aspects of the methodology of conducting research regarding media influences on suicidal behaviour are highlighted, & illustrated using examples of some research conducted by the author & his colleagues in Oxford. Evidence is reviewed showing that media reporting & portrayal of suicidal behaviour can be modified & that such changes can have beneficial effects on suicide & attempted suicide. Finally, some suggestions are made about how the media can be used positively in prevention of suicidal behaviour. (7 refs)
