The aim of this study was to examine the concept of individualized care for people with major depressive disorder, understand the drugs currently available, & review the implications of switching drug therapy solely for cost reasons. The authors found that the development of new & better drugs to treat depression has had a significant impact on the nation’s rate of suicide. The costs associated with attempting to reduce prescription drug use are reviewed, & adequate care, careful cross-tapering, & cultural concerns are also addressed. (9 refs)
