In this paper, the author uses 3 case studies of terminally ill patients to illustrate assessment & management of normal distress & grieving, clinical depression, & the wish to hasten death in the presence of psychological distress. Indicators of depression, including suicidal ideation, are reviewed, & treatment options are discussed. (95 refs)
