Attenders of a University Hospital Psychiatric Emergency Service in Belgium: General Characteristics and Gender Differences

The aim of this study was to provide a clinical & epidemiological profile of patients consulting the psychiatric emergency team of a Belgium emergency service. Results showed that male patients presented more with hostility or violence towards others & substance abuse, whereas female patients presented more with suicidality & depressed mood. Implications for effective psychiatric emergency team action are discussed. (55 refs)
