The authors examined the long-term effects of a telephone helpline & emergency response service on suicide in an elderly population of northern Italy. They found that significantly fewer suicide deaths occurred among elderly service users than were expected. The service performed especially well for elderly females. Implications for future research are discussed. (24 refs)
