The current study was conducted to increase understanding of atypical depression diagnosed using only the reversed vegetative symptoms of hypersomnia & hyperphagia. An atypical depression group was identified & compared to individuals with nonatypical depression & individuals without a psychiatric disorder. Atypical depression was associated with a greater percentage of women & an earlier age of onset, & individuals reported higher rates of most depressive symptoms & of suicidal thoughts & attempts. Implications are discussed. (51 refs)
