The authors tested whether the risk of suicide & attempted suicide in placebo-controlled studies among patients with schizophrenia is higher than in the active treatment arms of such studies. In 31 studies, 7152 patients were included. 1 suicide & 2 attempted suicides occurred in the placebo group, while 1 suicide & 11 attempted suicides occurred in the active compound groups. Neither difference was found to be statistically significant. Implications are discussed. (14 refs)
