This paper provides an overview of issues to be addressed in the assessment & management of suicidal patients. Topics discussed include the epidemiology of suicide, theories of suicide, & approaches to prevention. International suicide rates as of June 1999 are also presented. A variety of risk factors are discussed, & guidelines adapted from the International Association for Suicide Prevention are provided for an individualized approach to the assessment & management of patients at risk.
