This article summarizes research supporting recommendations for responsible news reporting of suicide, which were made in August 2001. Ways that reporters can cover suicide without encouraging imitation are explored. Interviews with 57 journalists indicated that most were unaware that their reporting could produce suicide imitation. Opportunities for health professionals in aiding journalists in their reporting are also discussed. (37 refs)
