This is the first in a series of 3 article on questionnaire research in which the authors aim to present a practical guide that will enable research teams to do questionnaire research that is well designed, well managed, & non-discriminatory & which contributes to a generalizable evidence base. The process of selecting & designing the questionnaire is discussed, & key questions for researchers to consider while engaged in this process are presented. (21 refs)
