This chapter reviews the literature on lethal violence circa 1972-1992 that is directly related to the development of a comprehensive explanation of homicide & suicide. The authors argue that althougth interest in violence is great amongst both the general public & scholars, the study of suicide & homicide have become separate enterprises, & even where they are studied together, a unifying theoretical model is lacking. The question of whether accidenctal deaths should be studied along with suicide & homicide is also addressed.
