Ikeda R~~Mahendra R~~et al
This report provides national, annualized, weighted estimates of nonfatal injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments (EDs) during 2000. Overall, self-inflicted injury rates were highest among adolescents & young adults, particularly females. 90% of self-inflicted injuries were the result of poisoning or being cut/pierced with a sharp instrument, & 60% were probable suicide attempts. The future usefulness of such data, particularly in terms of intervention research, is discussed. (10 refs)
