This overview points out various issues regarding alcohol/drug use in Native communtiies including: the lack of accurate prevalence data; myths concerning different responses to (& metabolism of) alcohol in Natives; the extent of concern about substance dependence expressed within Native communities themselves & among health professionals; & the lack of critical evaluation of existing programs & poltiices for the preventionand treatment of alcohol/drug problems in Native communities.
