This booklet provides information for caregivers of clients who injure themselves. It describes what self-injury is, the possible motivations behind such behavior, & who is at risk. Common myths about self-injury are presented & corrected, & diagnoses associated with self-harming behaviors are reviewed. The increased risk for suicide arising from untreated self-harming behaviors is also discussed. Suggestions for helping self-injuring clients are presented, as are lists of support organizations & references for further reading. (11 refs)
