Mental Health Treatment for Self-Injurious Behaviors: Clinical Practice Guidelines for Children and Adolescents in the Emergency Department

This report was developed by the National Association of Social Workers in order to address the unique emergency care needs of young people exhibiting injuries resulting from self-injurious behavior such as attempted suicide, substance abuse, & interpersonal violence. The report documents the need for clinical practice guidelines, discusses self-injurious behaviors commonly seen in the emergency department, & outlines mental health interventions for children through prehospital to emergency department discharge.
