In response to a growing community concern about the incidence of youth suicide in Australia, a Task Force was commissioned by the Victorian Government to investigate the issue in 1996, & presented its report on suicide prevention to the Victorian Premier & Minister for Health in July 1997. This editorial discusses the issues raised by the report, highlighting certain protective factors identified by the Task Force as having proven succesful in promoting resilience in people against committing suicide.
