This article examines the disparity between recommendations & practice regarding deliberate self-harm in children & adolescents in an Accident & Emergency department in the UK. In two-thirds of the cases the young person was not admitted & one third were discharged without any discussion with or assessment by Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Revision of admission & discharge procedures are recommended in order to improve practice. (19 refs)
