This article discusses the difficulties in diagnosing bipolar disorder & bipolar spectrum disorders, because of symptoms that overlap with other psychiatric disorders, particularly unipolar depression. The author emphasizes the need for recognition of the broader spectrum of bipolar disorders & their adequate treatment, especially in light of the high personal & societal toll bipolar disorder exacts, with high rates of suicide & interpersonal problems & a substantial economic burden.
