Rate and Risk Factors For Suicide, Suicidal Ideation, and Suicide Attempts in Chronic Epilepsy

This article reviews the topic of suicide among individuals with epilepsy. Four specific areas are discussed: a) rates of suicide among individuals with epilepsy compared with the general population; b) risk factors for suicidal ideation & behavior; c) methods for assessing suicidal risk; d) clinical interventions & strategies to address suicidal risk in people with epilepsy. The authors aim to identify risk factors that can be used to increase recognition of individuals with epilepsy at risk for suicide, & provide strategies for assessing & treating suicidal behavior.
