This review provides an update on the role that alcohol plays in the presentation & management of mental disorders in the elderly. The author finds that while mild to moderate levels of alcohol consumption have a protective effect on the occurrence of dementia, the concurrence of alcohol use disorder, depression, & suicide in the elderly has important implications for prevention & treatment. Recommendations are made for treatment of elderly patients with alcohol use disorders. (30 refs)
