The authors argue that repeat deliberate self harm is a recognized risk factor for completed suicide & therefore reduction by effective health service represents a valid contribution to suicide prevention. Because only a fraction of people with deliberate self harm presentations actually reach specialist mental health follow-up appointments, the authors describe health system organizational change strategies to improve health service engagement for the target group, & present data demonstrating the effectiveness of these strategies.
