This paper deals with correlates of suicide & violence risk & attempts to integrate the findings in terms of a theory called a two-stage model of countervailing forces, which assumes that the strength of the aggressive impulse is controlled by different classes of variables called amplifiers & attenuators. The authors argue that the effects of these forces makes prediction of suicide & violence extremely difficult. (15 refs)
