The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the lifetime, last year, & 6-month prevalence & demographic correlates of suicidal behavior in a defined population of urban African American young adults; 2) to determine the degree of mental health service utilization among attempters; 3) to study the comorbidity between mental disorders & suicidal behavior; 4) to examine gender differences in the psychiatric diagnosis associated with attempts & ideation. Findings for each of these objectives are discussed. (45 refs)
