This article examines the changing trends in suicide in New Zealand & provides an overview of research that has been conducted to address this problem. Rates were found to have dramatically increased for young people in New Zealand between 1970 & 1990. Young men and women were found to be equally troubled when both completed and attempted suicides were compared. Several import risk factors are identified, & prevention initiatives recently recommended by a government task force are reviewed. (2 refs)
