The authors studied rates of suicide in the United States, analyzing data based on emergency department admissions from 1992 through 1999. Trends in the U.S. suicide rate & emergency department admissions for self-inflicted injuries were found to be moving in opposite directions since 1992. Whether emergency department admissions for self-inflicted injuries are a resonable proxy for suicide attempts is discussed. (4 refs)
