The author of this article argues that human service cutbacks have brought many new losses of economic assistance into the lives of the poor, which has led to the flourishing of a combination of powerlessness & stress. The resulting increase in psychiatric symptomatology, including suicide, homicide, & disabling thought & mood disorders, are seen as serious social problems in need of examination.
