This review provides an overview of the pharmacological & clinical characteristics of atypical antipsychotics. In particular the authors discuss their efficacy in treating psychotic & negative symptoms as well as treatment-refractory patients. Affective symptoms & suicidality are specifically explored. Important side effects & possible interactions are reviewed in detail & recommendations for clinical use are given. (168 refs)
