The goals of this study were to describe the extent of the psychiatric “boarder” problem & to compare the characteristics of patients who are placed successfully into psychiatric facilities from the emergency department with those who require admission to a medical service as a boarder when psychiatric facilities are full. Among the findings it was determined that suicidal patients had an increased risk of boarding. The findings & their implications are discussed. (29 refs)
