This review summarizes the recent literature on borderline personality disorder. Results indicate that this disorder can be diagnosed reliably, & is quite prevalent in clinical & non-clinical settings. The features of borderline personality disorder appear to be relatively stable in young adulthood & are associated with a wide range of impairment. Suicidal behavior is a common complication, & is a chief concern in the clinical management of borderline personality disorder. (54 refs) (SC)
