This article discusses the epidemiology of central pain. 90% of cases of central pain are caused by strokes. 85% of patients with central pain experience constant pain. Pathophysiological explanations, sensory symptoms, & treatment approaches to central pain are presented. It is noted that these patients are at high risk for suicide. In a study described in this article, 1 of 21 patients completed suicide, 2 others seriously attempted suicide & 5 patients were hospitalized for suicidal ideation over a 5-year period. (24 refs) (SC)
